Perfecting your golf swing should start with understanding the elements of a Golf Swing. There are some basic elements of the golf swing which golfers need to address in a mental checklist before taking each shot. The first element is the body’s alignment toward the target. Step back five to ten feet behind the ball, with the ball directly between your body and the desired target. Select guidance targets on the ground (a marker, leaves, blades of grass, dirt, or something else that is fixed) inches in front and behind the golf ball that should be on a direct line with where you are standing and the target. Stay focused with your eyes on those ground targets as you approach the ball.
Align the club face behind the ball, with the center of the club face so that it is on a direct line between the two ground targets which you have picked out. Now grip the club with just enough tension to keep it from slipping in your hands throughout the arc of the golf swing. Set your feet so that they are aligned on a parallel path with your ground targets only a shoulder width apart, and bend knees slightly but comfortably. The foot closest to the hole should be pointed slightly outward and toward the target, in order to allow your hips to flow freely through the swing.
Your torso should be tilted slightly towards the ball but be sure to keep your back straight. Let your arms hang freely in front of the body as you grip the club. Your shoulders should now be parallel with the ground targets and the toes. Tilt your head downward with your eyes fixed firmly on the ball. Following this routine described is known as addressing the ball and sometimes called the set-up.Make sure you repeat this same set-up procedure in the same manner and order for every shot consistently so that it becomes a regular habit.
Okay, now you are ready to begin the golf swing. Keep your back elbow tucked as closely as possible to your ribs and slowly take the club back on a straight line - along the plain of those ground targets which you selected. Ensure that you keep your front elbow locked throughout the entire back swing and make sure that you never take your eyes off the ball. As you perform this motion your chin should naturally tuck into your front shoulder. Your hips should remain still but tilted slightly while your front knee will turn inward. At the apex of the back swing you should allow your wrists to break slightly.
Then as you bring the club downward toward the ball uncoiling the wrists, shift your weight onto the front foot. Attempt to generate force and speed on your down swing, but never take the club face off of the target line. On making contact with the ball, the club face should strike the ground as it continues to move down and through the ball, taking a divot from the ground in the area just past where the ball was lying - and on the line of your second ground target.
Finish the golf swing with a high follow through of your hands and the club. At completion of your swing your hips should be turned toward the target. Your weight should have shifted, and now should be firmly on your back foot. You can smile as you watch the ball fly toward your target with precision.
